It’s birthday season in our family and this was my week (already shifting the focus to welcome our newest teen into the family). โฃ
โฃ
I’m so grateful for my tribe, porch deliveries with bouquets, chocolate, trail mix, champagne, time on the lake, phone calls, texts, messages, and drive-bys. โฃ
โฃ
I’m looking forward to 46. This is a year committed to working for justice, leaning in on anti racism over and over again, seeking adventures, and becoming a better version of me.. and just learning to love this version of me โค๏ธ
82 years ago today, June 25, the FDA created the Cosmetic Act. It was the first and last time Congress passed a major law regulating safety in the beauty industry. โฃ
โฃ
According to Dr. Susan Mayne, director of the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition at the FDA, “The industry looks very different than it did in 1938 when FDA was given regulatory authority over cosmetics.” โฃ
โฃ
Most of you know I work for a company committed to fighting for #betterbeauty laws. While we have made significant strides and had some key wins over the past seven years, our mission to get safer products into the hands of everyone remains a daily fight. โฃ
โฃ
Despite rapid growth, the $90 billion beauty industry in US is largely unregulated. โฃ
โฃ
Please join us today with this simple text (BETTERBEAUTY to 52886) and flood the inboxes of our elected officials to show that we demand safer products for our kids and neighbors and community. โฃ
โฃ
Taken our text action before? Great! We change the message and the ask frequently, so we encourage you to take it periodically. Re-share it with your friends and family, so they can do the same. โฃ

“History is not just facts and events. History is also a pain in the heart and we repeat history until we are able to make another’s pain the the heart of your own.”โฃ
~ Professor Julius Lesterโฃ
โฃ
This book is fantastic! Add it to your list. I had no idea what kind of story I was starting when I borrowed it. I was simply eager to read more books by @suemonkkidd after listening to her interview with @brenebrown.โฃ
โฃ
I didn’t know I was embarking on the story of one of America’s first female abolitionists.โฃ
โฃ
This book is also inspired by one of my favorite pieces of art, The Dinner Party, by @judy.chicago. It’s honestly one of the first pieces of art that truly moved me.โฃ
โฃ
Thank you Sue Monk Kidd for introducing me to the Grimke sisters and reminding me why I was so moved by the Dinner Party decades ago, when I was just barely 20 yrs old. โฃ

Reading. Learning. Listening. โฃ

Let’s talk about racism and when it starts. I was surprised when I was researching this about 15 years ago for my child development work. I think most of us assume racism happens as a result of a negative experience or being parented by overtly racist people. That’s just not true. โฃ
โฃ
The research shocked many then, and I’m sure will be surprising now. So, sit down… โฃ
โฃ
Research suggests babies as young as 6 months old show signs of bias against people of different colors. โฃ
โฃ
Here’s why, infants by nature have a negative reaction to unfamiliar things and people. Since most white infants are around people of their same race (and see mostly white images everywhere), there is an inherent bias against things that look different. Antidote: surround your children with people, dolls, pictures, books, etc of people of all colors. โฃ
โฃ
But don’t stop there.โฃ
โฃ
White parents often avoid speaking with their children about race and racism and instead use colorblind rhetoric. We do it because we think it’s how to raise a non-racist child. From a sociological perspective though, this may do more harm than good. The best thing we can do is to acknowledge the difference and discuss race with open appreciation and admiration. โฃ
โฃ
There are racial differences. We can see them. Children can see them. Let’s acknowledge those and celebrate them.
We cannot control the state of the world, we can only work with our. own. state. We can only take responsibility for how we manage our own health -- mental, emotional, and spiritual health. โฃ
โฃ
I know that many of us are experiencing some real shit. Maybe it’s a loss of income or loss of a loved one. Grieve that shit! Feel the fear, the pain, the loss. And find ways to give yourself opportunities to pause, breathe, and recenter. โฃ
โฃ
This is our current reality, like it or not, so let’s breathe into it and take the next step.โฃ
โฃ
Wellness in the age of Coronavirus is decidedly about self-responsibility: โฃ

1๏ธโฃ Learn how to support Your Immune Health (my top 5 tips here -> https://www.emilygeizer.com/blog/immune-system) LINK IN BIOโฃ
โฃ
2๏ธโฃ Make feeling good a practice. Identify the things that bring you joy and do them more often. Make feeling good a priority the same way you might make exercise or family a priority.โฃ
โฃ
3๏ธโฃ Stop freebasing CNN! Limit your intake of news. The news cycle and devastating images create a lot of trauma in the body and mind and exacerbate your levels of stress and fear. Choose a few key outlets where you can check-in each day. Keep intake to under 1 hour and best if you can read, rather than watch.โฃ
โฃ
4๏ธโฃ Get your Vitamin N. Nature! Numerous studies have shown that being outdoors or near green spaces can reduce stress, fatigue and aggression and improve attention capacity and cognitive development. You’ll automatically increase your Vitamin D levels, which matters for respiratory virus infection.โฃ
โฃ
5๏ธโฃ Learn to take inventory of how you are feeling. Feelings are to feel. Be kind to yourself and begin to notice your feelings. Literally ask yourself, what am I feeling right now? Name it, without judgement, but with the love of a mother. We need to mother ourselves through this.โฃ

Oxybenzone, like bisphenol-A (BPA) is a chemical that mimics estrogen (xenoestrogen) and has also been linked to ovarian cysts and other conditions such as fibroids, miscarriage, breast cancer, endometriosis, infertility, breast development in boys and men, decrease in sperm count, thyroid problems, etc. โฃ

Oxybenzone is absorbed into the body after a single use. The FDA also found that the sunscreen ingredients could be detected on the skin and in blood weeks after application ended.โฃ

When the FDA began to consider sunscreen safety, it grandfathered in active ingredients from the late 1970s without reviewing the evidence of their potential hazards. These include some of the most commonly used UV filters, including oxybenzone, octinoxate, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and avobenzone.โฃ

I’m hearing from so many friends who are scared for Phase 2 and things opening up again. Can you relate? ๐โ๏ธ๐๐ฝโ๏ธโฃ

Experts are suggesting that social distancing, not touching your face, and washing/sanitizing your hands are vastly more important than anything else you do. They also recommend wearing masks when in crowded, public places. I’m 100% on board with all of these, but think there’s an important part of the conversation missing ->โฃ
โฃ
We need to take better care of our bodies too. Specifically, the immune system. โฃ
โฃ
Your immune system is complex, but the steps to support it are not. In a recent article I outlined 5 key steps. One that may surprise you is eliminating some common chemicals found in your personal care products. Phthalates (found in shampoo, lotion, soap, perfume, detergents, dryer sheets) alter levels of cytokines, which are key players in the immune response to coronavirus.โฃ

“Life’s work is to wake up, to let the things that enter into your life wake you up rather than put you to sleep. The only way to do this is to open, be curious, and develop some sense of sympathy for everything that comes along, to get to know its nature and let it teach you what it will.” ~ Pema Chödrön
Heads up! Just because they put a leaf on the packaging doesn’t mean it’s good for you ๐ โฃ

Have you heard of greenwashing?โฃ

More than 95% of green products are guilty of this deceitful marketing practice. To avoid being duped -> โฃ

Next question. Have you heard of cleanwashing? Same idea and it’s rampant in the clean beauty industry. I broke it down for you and shared everything you need to know in my latest article (link in profile): Are Your Favorite Brands Guilty of Greenwashing? โฃ

My Mother’s Day gift to myself this year is making my new website live this morning ๐๐. After years of paying people to create sites for me, I eeked out every bit of creativity I could muster the past few weeks to re-imagine, create, and build it: emilygeizer.comโฃ
โฃ
Having babies is what inspired me to start my own business 12 years ago. These girls are far from babies today, but I am still a mama on a mission to make this world a safer, healthier place for them. โฃ
โฃ
My entrepreneurial journey began 13 years ago, when I stopped teaching. Parents continued reaching out for parenting advice, so I created a platform to share Montessori-inspired parenting concepts, right down to potty training. I quickly discovered that moms were utterly exhausted and no amount of parenting advice could solve that. Running on empty was the main issue getting in the way of being the parent they wanted to be. Seeing this and experiencing how simple lifestyle choices can help led me to get my health coaching certification and begin working with women. โฃ
โฃ
So, on this Mother’s Day, my wish for all women is that you carve out a moment of time to do something just for you. Maybe you can fit in a nap or a run or simply a few breaths. If you have 8 minutes, treat yourself to this (link in profile) http://www.emilygeizer.com/grounding-experienceโฃ
